A complete set of F. W. Dupee’s The Miscellany, a short-lived 1930’s literary periodical run out of New York which ran for 6 issues from March 1930 to March 1931, together with the wrappers only to the prospective number, December 1929. Most significantly, The Miscellany saw the first appearance of a number of poems from William Carlos Williams, none of which remained the same in later publications. In March 1930 Williams published “Birds and Flowers”, and in November 1930 two poems, “Love in a Truck or The Sea-Elephant” and “The Trees”. All three were next published in Poems 1929-1931. “Birds and Flowers” in the words of Williams’ bibliographer Emily Mitchell Wallace with “many changes”; “Love in a Truck…” with its title settled on “The Sea-Elephant”; and “Trees” “not the same poem.” Further interest also includes the first appearance of Yvor Winters’ “The Last Visit” and the second appearance of Conrad Aiken’s “Prelude”. With a typescript poem by Kenneth White (an unknown poet?), “Recital” laid into the March 1930 issue at White’s contribution, commencing with White’s New York mailing address. “Recital” does not feature in White’s contributions to either the March or September 1930 issues.

All issues in good condition only. Numbers 3 to 6 with water stains at bottom left corner running throughout; covers variously lightly marked and darkened at edges. Number 1 and 6 chipped along the spine. The December 1929 issue is in poor condition; presumably the content has been lost, with only a “Notes on Contributors” leaf remaining, and the wraps are torn but complete. A scarce set.
